Hi and welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday post! I have been absent last week due to the topic not piquing my interest, plus me being unable to bloghopat all as I had some other commitments that were interfering with my blogging. However, I’m back this week and although this topic isn’t really for me either as I’m not really someone who enjoys cozy reads or books with low stakes. I know other people do, so I want to compile a list of books that I’ve read (except number 8) and are considered cozy or atmospheric. Just to help filling other people’s TBR. Sorry, not sorry. Here we go!
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
- Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree – A book that will probably pop up on many lists this week, but this is the ultimate definition of a cozy autumnal read. I still have to give it a second try as I had to put it aside the first time around.
- Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune – I assume many people will go with that other, very famous, novel by this author. But I decide to go a different route once again. I’ve noticed this book has flown quite under the radar, but it’s still cozy. Or not exactly cozy, but ghosty which fits this month perfectly. It still has some interesting characters (Klune has a way of making pretty dull characters interesting), and some life lessons without being too didactic. I have to admit that I enjoyed this book, even though I was pretty wary at first and it was in the middle of summer. (review)
- The Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna – Witches and cozy with little to no stakes couldn’t be left out in a list near the end of October, right? It’s pretty decent, but the stakes are too low for me. I still had an enjoyable time, entirely due to the smooth writing. (review)
- Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill – This book is rather atmospheric than cozy, because this author spends a lot of time crafting the world this story is set in. This is a stand alone with a quest but has pretty low stakes nevertheless. It’s a lesser-known book. (review)
- One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig – This book gives off so many autumnal vibes, it couldn’t be left out of this list due to its atmosphere. (review)
- Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor – The stakes seem pretty high in this duology but apparently are not. However, the writing is pretty poetic and the story therefore atmospheric, so I couldn’t leave this one out either. In contradiction to many other books on the list that only got 3 stars at most, this one got the full 5 stars. I have to admit that I struggled at first due to the writing, because I was reading it in English all those years ago. This novel made so much more sense to me once it was translated to Dutch.
- Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett – This is a crossover between cozy fantasy and higher fantasy. Yes, the stakes are low, and the vibes are atmospheric, but the story gets close to being pretty dangerous at times. Especially in the second book of this trilogy. I strongly recommend saving this entire series for autumn or winter. (review)
- A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher – okay okay, I haven’t tried this one yet, but it’s on my TBR for October. I possibly won’t get to it as I’m kind of in a slump and falling awkwardly behind on this TBR.
- The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab – You have to read this book for the writing alone, that’s all I’ll be saying about it.
- Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa – This is not a fantasy novel, but cozy nonetheless. Again, pretty low stakes and just some heartwarming Japanese literary fiction. (review)
