Hi all, and welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday post! As you might have noticed, I have been a bit absent the past week and even didn’t participate in Top Ten Tuesday. This was not without reason. Firstly, I felt like we have covered the topic of Books wit an Occupation in the Title pretty recently. Secondly and most importantly, I was on holiday and had little to no time to bloghop. I only had my phone and not every blog is equally accessible on phone. I prefer doing major bloghopping as with these kind op memes on my computer. So, Here I am, back again. But I will be going rogue today. Today’s topic is Villains, but I just returned from a one week holiday, the laundry is still in the washing machine when I type this… So, I decided to list some books in where the main characters go on a getaway. This can be a weekend getaway, or a longer vacation. Just to keep the holiday spirit going on for a bit longer.
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
- One Golden Summer by Carley Fortune – This is one of my more recent reads in which main character Alice decides to take her grandma on a two-month break to her happy place, Berry’s Bay. They both need this getaway for different reasons; Alice desperately needs a change of scenery and to take a break from work, whereas her grandmother has to rehabilitate after a nasty fall. (review)
- People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry – One of the more obvious choices here, but main characters Poppy and Alex decide to go on vacation together after not being in touch for a few years. They always went on vacation together, till they had a huge fall out. Will this vacation strengthen their bond again or is this damaged for good?
- Did I Mention I Love You? by Estelle Maskame – This was such a classic about a decade ago, but our main character whose name I can’t remember right now spends the summer away from home, with her dad and his new family. And things happen, let’s leave it at that. I still have to continue this series, maybe I will do so in winter, to still get a glimpse of summer on those dark, rainy, gloomy days.
- Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover – Not the best book out there, but another novel where the main character is spending the summer away from home, with her dad and his new family. It’s set on a peninsula. I read it twice, once in English and once in Dutch. I didn’t really like it though.
- The French Cookery School by Caroline James – In this novel, main character Caroline (I honestly thought this was a joke) desperately needs a break and decide to embark on a trip to France to take a week full of cooking classes. In this week, she comes face to face with herself a lot, and harsh. I won’t be saying more about this novel though. (review)
- It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey – Piper is not on a vacation per se, because during her stay at this fishhermans town, she has to work on herself and her image. But still, she’s in a different environment and therefore it counts as a vacation. She really takes a break though.
- Here We Go Again by Alison Cochrun – Two former best friends, yet rivals, embark on a road trip to fullfill their good friend and lifelong mentor’s dying wish. They cross the entire country and take some detours. Not the vacation you might have been looking for, but nevertheless a road trip. In contradiction to the other books on this list, this one has lots of depth. Cochrun addresses multiple heavier topics and lets the characters grow significantly. (review)
- To Italy, With Love by Nicky Pellegrino – What’s a list of books with vacations without a trip to Italy? In this book, Sarah-Jane is driving around Italy in an old convertible to forget about everything and anything, especially love. I have read this years ago and it suited me right back then as I read this book in the middle of a heatwave. It’s not too deep though.
- Fun For the Whole Family by Jennifer E. Smith – Let’s get away to some snowy mountains on a family weekend in North Dakota. This book is okay, but it lacks depth for me. I see why other people love it though. (review)
- Happy Place by Emily Henry – Okay, I always try to avoid putting an author twice on this kind of lists, but I felt really stuck. So, here’s another book by Emily Henry. This annual getaway with this group of friends is one that would get on my nerves, and you have to find out why this is for yourself. (review)
I usually find books set on vacation a bit lacking for me, they don’t grip me too much. I can’t put a finger on why not, but that they just don’t is a matter of fact.
Do you enjoy reading books set on vacation?
