Top Ten Tuesday: Beach Reads

It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday post! This week’s topic is Beachy Reads and is actually not something I really vibe with as I’m not someone who curates their beach reads. I mean, I read Fonda Lee’s Jade City at such a spot, as well as a murder mystery by Tess Gerritsen. I often do not really enjoy the typical beach reads as they lack a lot for the critical reader in me. I therefore wanted to go very, very rogue by posting ten books to diversify your reading, but I need more time to create that one. So, that topic is shelved for now and will be covered whenever it’s the right time. Without further ado, I will just provide you a quick list of books with summery/beach vibes, not necessarily ones I enjoyed or have read.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch – Hellooooooo the cover? The setting? Ice cream? Hot summer nights? This book has it all!
  2. The Summer Daughter by Colleen French – One of the main characters actually works at an outdoor shop. I mean, the one that sells outdoor gear for surfing et cetera. And the town this novel is set in thrives in summer because of the tourists.
  3. One Golden Summer by Carley Fortune – This one just screams summer all over the place and its very digestible for a day at the beach.
  4. The Endless Beach by Jenny Colgan – It has beach in the title and that’s the only reason for a spot this week. I won’t be reading it. Actually, I think I already did, but I’m not a real fan of Colgan’s books as they are pretty formulaic and lack the depth I seek. Never mind, this is the second book in the “Mure” series and I just didn’t really enjoy the first one. So this is getting knocked off of the TBR.
  5. Beach Read by Emily Henry – Like duhhhhh. This was my first introduction to this author when I thought she could be a new autobuy author for me. Oh, how wrong have I been. Looking back on it now, I think this book is mediocre at best.
  6. Did I Mention I Love You? by Estelle Maskame – Another book set during summer break and the characters go to the beach a lot. I enjoyed this one back in the day, but never continued the series. What’s new…
  7. Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover – This book is… not good but is set on a peninsula and the beach plays an important role.
  8. It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey – The setting is literally a fisherman’s town with beaches and boats. So yeah. It’s okay, a bit overhyped in my opinion.
  9. The Housemaid by Freida McFadden – When I think of beachy reads, apart from the summer vibes, I also think of books that are very easy to digest. This one therefore can’t be missed on this list. Did I enjoy it? No, not at all. But many others do.
  10. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Not the best of the California quartet, but the obvious choice for this post. The main characters love to surf a lot and the house the annual summer party is taking place at, is built near the beach.

Okay, so here they are. Random I know, but I had to quickly write this post.

Do you enjoy beachy reads?

  8. I’ve always loved the cover of Love & Gelato!

  9. Nice list! I have read Love & Gelato, though it has been a while since I did. I remember it being cute. I have been hearing that Freida McFadden has easy to read books, but I have been hearing more and more who are not impressed with her books. I still plan to try her out, but I am not expecting much now.

  10. Oh, too bad about The Endless Beach! I’m a Colgan fan, and I did think the 2nd Mure book was a lot more engaging than the first. I’ve had my eye on Love & Gelato for a while now — seems like a perfect summer book!

  11. The housemaid was a wild read, lols.

  12. The Jenna Evans Welch books are perfect summer reads!! Yeah, I read a lot of varied things on the beach. Jade City is an anywhere read! 🙂

  14. Emily Henry is making an appearance on many lists today. I haven’t read her yet, but am looking forward to it.

  15. I read a different book by Carley Fortune, but she does seem to give off the summery vibes in her books and covers. But I love that you bring books like Jade City and Tess Gerritson mysteries with you to the beach.

    1. I bring my phone and the books are on there 🙂

      1. Isn’t that such a great thing? It’s perfect for when I want to read but don’t want to carry a book around.

  16. […] particular book that puts me out of such a situation. I therefore decided to go ahead with a topic I have been teasing a few weeks ago, Books to diversify your reading. I’m trying my best to list ten books as diverse as possible. […]
