Top Ten Tuesday: Ways In Which My Bloggin/Reviewing Style Has Changed Over Time

Hi and welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday post, on a Saturday! You may wonder why I only post a Top Ten Tuesday post now… Well, I was in London from Monday to Friday and due to unforeseen circumstances, I had no time to draft this week’s post earlier. Furthermore, I already knew I wouldn’t be able to bloghop and visit other people’s posts, so it was all a combination of factors which made me miss this week’s Top Ten Tuesday. However, it’s not too late to do this topic right now, so let’s do it on another day of the Week. This week’s topic is Ten Ways in Which My Blogging/Review Style Has Changed Over Time and is submitted by Susan over at Bloggin’ ‘bBout Books. I have been in the blogging game since 2017, so that’s a long time!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. My blog has seen multiple hosting parties and languages. I started out in Dutch on Blogger, moved to free WordPress, got self-hosted, got to know the international blogging community, switched to a bilingual blog which turned out to become a mess, switched back to Dutch, then to English, only to start back in Dutch once again. Now I have two separate blogs, both on WordPress business plans which is getting a bit ridiculous so I’m in the process of moving both blogs to one hosting package which saves costs in the end. This blog is getting moved ASAP.
  2. I only participate in memes whenever I find the topic of the week appealing and/or I find a way to tweak it. I used to be someone who wanted to take part in anything and everything, but I found myself repeating posts too often as different memes covered the same topic. Sometimes even in the same week.
  3. I don’t have to be part of all the bookish social media. I think this comes with the years and aging, but I don’t have time to maintain a gazillion different platforms. Moreover, the community has become more toxic over the past few years. Finally, algorithms on social media platforms don’t seem to like bookish content all that much, so posts hardly get seen or track any interaction at all. So, why putting so much effort in something that won’t be seen? I find myself spending more time on the blog. BookTok is the “it” nowadays, but I’m too old for that LOL.
  4. When looking at my review style, I’m a bit of a goofball. I haven’t found my true style, because I’ve tried many different types of reviews and I don’t want to come off as too formal. I see many different types of reviews, and I still need to find my own way without becoming a copycat.
  5. I had a review structure but loosened up a bit and threw it out of the window. I wonder whether this is a good decision.
  6. On weekdays I have a set time for bloghopping, which is in the early morning or quickly on my commute. I only continue reading posts that really grab my attention, because of the fact I only have a 15-minute commute. I know I should invest more time in this part of blogging, but life happens.
  7. I try to review every book on my blog, even though I maybe shouldn’t. If I really have nothing to say, I won’t waste a whole review on that specific book, but I will mention them in my monthly wrap up.
  8. I made one set of graphics. My blog used to be a mish mash of all kinds of graphics, but this doesn’t really work for me anymore. I will have to update all my old posts someday, but I will do so whenever this blog will be moved to its new home. I moved my Dutch blog before my holiday, but this blog will follow suit pretty soon.
  9. I created review indexes because this brings much more of an overview into my blog and it’s easier to find a review when you need it for reference for instance. I use the Ultimate Book Blogger plugin for this, which I have been using on and off since 2018. I did whenever I was on the WordPress plans or Self-hosted, not when I was on the free platforms.
  10. I don’t write my posts in WordPress anymore. As English is not my first language, I rather write my posts in a text editor such as Word because it has a spellchecker. Furthermore, I’m sure my posts won’t get lost when my pc or WordPress crashes.

I think these are the main changes in my blogging/reviewing style over the years. What about you? How did your blogging/reviewing style change?

  1. Great list, Laurie. I’ve never gone to a self-hosted blog, so I can only imagine the expense. Would never know English isn’t your first language unless you told me. Hope you are still enjoying blogging. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I feel the same about BookTok! I kind of want to, to meet more readers, but I just can’t seem to start. Think it’s mostly because I use social media for work and I don’t want to have to use it even more than I do already. But I only really consider recommendations from book bloggers now, I don’t pay much attention to what I see on social media

  3. Can definitely agree about all the social media accounts and posts too! I mainly stick to Instagram despite how much Instagram has ruined their site. Hiding posts, burying them so they can’t be found or seen (even by followers because I will see posts in the popular feed weeks later that I have never seen before by people I follow, so it really ticks me off.). I also have zero patience for TikTok. Mainly because the videos and whatnot just take too long. I like the easy scrolling of Instagram and being able to read the caption, should there be one, and leave a quick comment if I see the engagement is low. Maybe I need to start commenting on the ones that have 100+ comments already but I feel like I want to engage with the posts that are struggling like mine instead! Lol.

I envy the the tech savvy skills to create images and whatnot! I have zero skill in this area and is the reason why I’ve always stuck with my blogger platform all these years. I can’t even remember how to change the look of my blog as I used to use free templates than I won a professional one some years ago and have just left the design as is. I feel like a refresh would be a good idea, I just haven’t gotten around to it since I feel like blogging is a dying habit but I keep doing it out of habit and enjoyment despite how empty it’s been the last few years.

    Thanks for visiting my TTT!

  4. I only participate in bookish social media on rare occasions myself!

  5. Same. I rarely post anything at all on social media. Bookstagram and BookTok just aren’t my mediums and that’s okay. I don’t have to do everything!

    Happy TTT (on a Monday)!

  6. Reading your list reminds me that I should have added host moving to mine as well! I Jumped around a bit, too. It was a chore at the time but overall, I’m glad I did it. 🙂 Thank you for visiting my list last week; apologies to just now be visiting here.
