Let’s Talk Bookish: Bookish Fandoms

It’s Friday, which means discussion time! It’s time for another Let’s Talk Bookish post and this week we’ll be discussing bookish fandoms. A really popular phenomenon in today’s bookish community. Am I part of one or more? Keep reading to find out.

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted by Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Since April 2022, this meme is hosted by , Aria @ Book Nook Bits and since February 2025, Dini @ DiniPandaReads is the co-host. Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and share their love by visiting each other’s posts.

Prompts: There are very popular bookish fandoms out there, especially in the romance fantasy genre (Maas, Yarros, LOTR, etc.). Are you part of a bookish fandom? If you are, what do you love about it? If not, do you think you’d ever want to be part of one? Does being part of the online book community help you connect to fandoms?

Even though I am still scrolling bookish social media every now and then, I’m not part of any fandom. I am scrolling the socials less frequently because A) I’m too bored by them and B) they’re becoming more and more toxic. It’s an environment where people dictate others what to and what not to read and therefore also what fandom people should or should not be part of in order to not being seen as problematic and therefore cancelled. Honestly, I’m too old for this high school phenomenon. Because let’s be honest, fandoms really can feel like that, high school with all its cliques and bullying. I do however enjoy most of the books/series that have huge fandoms, but I’m just not part of them.

Was I ever part of one in the past or will I be part of any in the future? No and no. I actually don’t care what people think of my reading tastes. I am not afraid to admit that many books (and their fandoms) that are seen as controversial, are some of my favourite books. For instance, Harry Potter. I still love the books and the universe as they were a huge part of my childhood and adolescence, but I truly dislike the author and what she stands for. I just don’t have the time to let other people dictate what to or not to like. Furthermore, I just don’t feel invested enough to devote my time to bookish fandoms, it’s just not for me.

In all honesty, being part of the bookish community doesn’t make me feel connected to any fandom at all, it’s actually a confirmation of why I want to stay away from them. This is all because of earlier mentioned toxicity. Yes, I truly found gems through bookish social media, but again, I don’t care for their fandoms.

What about you? Do you care about bookish fandoms or are you avoiding them?

  1. Yes, I do think they can sometimes get petty and toxic, or at least that’s what I hear through the social media grapevine. I’m okay with just enjoying the books I read on my own or having small groups with bookish friends to gush over them with.
