Prompts: Do you buy books randomly or do you think about what to buy? How do you decide which books to buy vs which books to borrow or just save for later? For books at the top of your TBR, is your go-to buying a book or do you check your library first? What book formats do you own most of – physical books, ebooks or audiobooks?

Do you buy books randomly or do you think about what to buy?

I do a bit of both actually. I know what’s on my TBR, and therefore know what books I want to read. Some get prioritized over others and I’m more curious for some than for others. I therefore think about whether to buy them or not. Meanwhile, I still buy books randomly, especially when there are monthly discounts! I still check if the synopsis sparks my interest though.

My decisions depend on multiple factors. One of the key factors is my intrigue by the synopsis. If I’m very curious for a certain book, the higher the chances of me buying it. Furthermore, popularity counts. I tend to buy many popular books, especially when there’s a discount! Yes, price still matters. If I’m not feeling a particular book or the price is too high for the level of curiosity, I will definitely check out if there’s an online version or if it’s available at the library for the blind.

Again, a combination of both here. Dutch editions I tend to buy (depends on the other factors though), English ones I tend to borrow or listen to via streaming. I just don’t really like Dutch audiobooks. However, they decreased the maximum speed to 2.0 at Storytel and that’s way and way too slow for me. I’ll definitely be falling asleep and zone out because of the slower speed. I’m very experienced and well-trained, so my comfort speed is 2.7. Gladly Audible still provides this, but it’s expensive. So, I’d rather buy the books at this point.

What book formats do you own most of – physical books, ebooks or audiobooks?

This is very easy. I don’t own physical books at all, because I can’t read them. So, spending money on them is pointless. I therefore own mostly ebooks, as well as audiobooks.

What about you? Do you buy books with any intention?

  1. Yes, I do both. There are some authors who are auto buys. Quite a few actually. Lol. I mostly do e books, but the price of some, especially traditional published, are extortionate for something I don’t own so I’ve started to buy “dead tree” books. I’ll also get the ebook later if it goes on offer to 99 pence.
    I don’t do audio books

  2. Same i do buy a lot if books at random when they are discounted too and oh wow 2.7x is amazing the fastest i can listen to is 2x haha how do you do it!!?? That is impressive l.

  3. x2.7 is a super impressive speed! The book I’m listening to right now was fairly slow at x2.0 so I’ve bumped it up to x2.3 but that’s the max I’m able to listen to while still retaining what I’m reading. Plus, this is the fastest I’ve ever listened to an audiobook!

Price definitely plays a big factor for me too. Gotta love those 99p deals for ebooks. Thanks for participating in LTB this week!

  4. I buy a lot of books used when I come across them and they look interesting, and the same with ebooks. If I’m going to buy a full-price brand new book, I sit on the idea for a while and determine if I really want the book that much.
