Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Would Have Been A Fool To Have Missed

It’s Tuesday and that means that it’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday post! You’ll be spoilt today, because I’ll be publishing multiple posts today since it’s the first of the month and I’m hopelessly behind on my reviews as I’ve finished 4 books in the past week. So, without further ado, let’s dive into today’s prompt! As it’s April Fool’s Day, this week’s topic is “Books You’d Be A Fool Not To Read”. I tweaked it a bit to “Books I Would Have Been A Fool To Have Missed”. And yes, that are quite a few!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – I’m always very conflicted about mentioning these books on my blog because this author is problematic as can be, but these books still were a huge part of my childhood. And I didn’t want to read them at first, because I thought fantasy wouldn’t be my cup of tea. I got the first audiobook as a present and I was lost.
  2. The Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer – I only heard about these books when the first movie got out in 2008, so yeah. The books weren’t available to me before, because the library for the blind/visually impaired never took them in production until I requested them to do so. Ebooks weren’t a thing in my teenage years.
  3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – I started this series late again, in 2018 to be exact. But I DNF’ed the first book as I couldn’t get into it at the time. This changed in 2020 and now I also finished the prequel. My review of the latter will be up soon.
  4. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead – This was actually for the same reason as for Twilight, the books weren’t available to me. The spin-off series however was, a bit strange to be honest. I was finally able to read this series once ebooks were available on iOS and screen reader friendly. That was 2015.
  5. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – Another series I wasn’t able to read before. I also learnt about it quite late, when I picked reading back up after the well-known slump after high school and required reading.
  6. The Mortal Instruments and other series in this universe by Cassandra Clare – Another series I hadn’t heard of until 2018 or so.
  7. Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan – I finally picked this book up last year after having it on and off my TBR for years.
  8. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green – Another book I only heard about when the movie came to theatres.
  9. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – I think that I wouldn’t have known about this series if I didn’t start blogging or finding my way onto bookish social media, but that applies to more books to be honest.
  10. The Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout – This series was only being published in Dutch in 2018, I mainly read Dutch novels and hardly picked up English books back then. In all honesty, I wasn’t drawn to these books at all at first and I swore to never ever ever read them. Yup, I was lost after reading the first book!

What books you’d been a fool to miss if you wouldn’t have read them?

  1. This is a great list! The only one I haven’t read is Archer’s Voice and I didn’t finish The Lunar Chronicles. I read book one and was going to finish the rest but I think that’s the same time I had my kids. I want to say I finished the Lux series but it’s been so long I forget if I did!

  2. The Fault in Our Stars is still one of my favorite books.

  3. Honestly, I feel the same way about the Harry Potter books. I loved them as a kid but don’t really talk about them anymore.

  4. A very interesting list, Laurie. I have read Hunger Games, but not the last two. The Fault in Our Stars is a great choice. I really need to finish The Lunar Chronicles, as I’ve loved all the ones I’ve read so far. Hmm, about JK Rowling. Yes, she is definitely problematic, but you can’t refute that her Harry Potter books aren’t great stories that were highly prized by many. My granddaughter loves them, but my son and DIL are not fans of Rowling. I will have to finally get to The Mortal Instruments.

  5. I have read only the first 2 books in HP, I am just not that much into series but regardless of the author it is a great story nonetheless, so no one should be ashamed or guilty tripped into liking her works… and that goes for any other author. I loooove The fault in our stars glad to see it here, I have Archers voice on my tbr! And cmon Twilight is a classic 👌 as my mum calls it tweet-lit 😄 🤣 she loves it too an she’s 55!

  6. I’ve only read the Harry Potter series from your list. I enjoyed them, but I read them as an adult so they weren’t life-changing for me. My own list of books I would have been a fool not to have read would include everything by Lois McMaster Bujold (SFF author) and the Meg Langslow mystery series by Donna Andrews. Thanks for the list and happy reading!

  7. There are SO many beloved books I never read, and The Twilight series is one. I did read two books in THG series (first and third I think) and I think I ended up liking the films better. Maybe someday I’ll try to reread those. 🙂

  8. I was dating my husband when Goblet of Fire came out, and I remember thinking people were so weird about the book’s release. How could any book be worthy of such attention? A couple of years later, I devoured the first four books and understood the fascination. It saddens me that JKR has said things that I can not abide by, and as such, I will no longer give her money through the assorted HP items that are available.

  9. Archer’s Voice is on my list for this year! I have read all the other series here, except for only the first book in Lux. Great topic!

  10. I also read 7 of these and I totally agree that I would have been a fool to have missed them. Still need to check out the other 3 though (Vampire Academy, Archer’s Voice and the Lux series).

  11. I adore The Shadowhunters!

  12. Haaaa these are all favorites of mine too!

  13. Oh I’ve read a lot of these! I haven’t read the Harry Potter series, which I have never really been interested in (I was a teen when the first book was released and really more interested in moving into adult fiction). I did end up reading the first book as a mother with one of my sons and was underwhelmed so I didn’t continue the series, but I was definitely not the target audience when I did pick it up. I also haven’t read Archer’s Voice. But the others were a big part of me revisiting YA in my 20 and 30s. It wasn’t really as prevalent when I was a teen myself, which is why I think I was really focused on adult books from the time I was 13-14.

    1. I think it became a thing when I was in my late teen years. But I was already gravitating towards adult fiction and therefore missed the entire genre until I started blogging in 2017. That’s why I’m so late on so many of these books.

  14. The Shadowhunter Chronicles are among my favorite series of all time

  15. So many good ones! It’s nice to see the Lunar Chronicles get a mention. I loved that series, but it doesn’t seem to get talked about all that much any more.

  16. I think The Hunger Games is one of those series that will end up being read in school. Enjoyed your thoughts on all these.

  17. The Hunger Games and The Lunar Chronicles are two of my favorite series so I completely agree with you about them! I also loved The Vampire Academy at the time, but it doesn’t stand out too much for me now. I’ve forgotten much of it. I think it’s fair that Harry Potter still holds a place in your heart despite the problematic author. It made a difference for a lot of people and it’s hard to discount that. Love your list!

  18. I was reluctant to read Harry Potter too! The books came out when I was a kid. All my friends were reading them. I didn’t think I’d like fantasy, but I was wrong.

  19. Wonderful list, I love the HP series and The Fault in Our Stars was great, so was the film.
