Top Ten Tuesday: End of Year 2024 Reading Goals Check-In

At the start of 2024, we all have set our bookish goals. Now that it’s the final few days of the year, it’s – besides checking in on my backlist books – time to do a final check in on my goals for the year. The official topic is Books I hope Santa Brings, but since I didn’t ask for books for Christmas and just got a huge gift card, I decided to go rogue yet again. I only wrote down 9 goals for 2024, even though I thought I listed 10. Did I meet them? I also did a mid-year check-in on these, has anything changed?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  • Read 50 books – I definitely met this goal (I did so in May already), I even doubled the number by now. I currently read 117 books instead of 50, and maybe I might finish another one tonight. Not sure yet. So, when this post goes live, I might have finished 118 books. I think I’ll set my reading goal this low again in 2025, no pressure and I will get my end of year stats. Because let’s face it, that’s the only reason why I set a reading goal each year.
  • Choosing quality over quantity – I think I did well in the end. Especially the first months, because I barely had a DNF. However, I read most books with pleasure and that’s what counts in the end right? Unfortunately, I encountered books that disappointed me, even though the premise sounded interesting to me. I think that’s something we can’t know beforehand and we have to overcome this hurdle along the way.
  • DNF more – I am still stubborn, because I didn’t DNF that many books. However, I DNF whenever I can’t deal with a book anymore, but there have been books I’ve read in 2024 I should better have put aside and never looked back. Of course I pushed through, hence why there have been a few 2 stars and even several 1 star ratings this year.
  • Cross posting my reviews – I still keep failing at this, I’m just too lazy I suppose. I do better for a short while, only to slack again. I’m the worst on Instagram though, I keep neglecting it. Maybe it’s because I’m still not satisfied with my feed, I thought I found my mojo and what language to post in back in October. But I’m still doubting and questioning.
  • Trying to write my reviews as soon as I can – I think I’m doing better in this, especially for this blog. But don’t get me started on my Dutch blog LOL.
  • Having back-up content – I think this is something every blogger could relate too, the desire to have some back-up content, but the lack of time to write that same content. I have days were I haven’t been posting and I think that’s okay. Maybe the goals of having back-up content was a bit too ambitious in the end.
  • Cleaning out the TBR – Well, this is a never-ending story and I have to try again in 2025. But there are so many new books getting published – which sound interesting – so the TBR keeps growing and growing. Relatable, anyone?
  • Buying less books – I’m scared to count my bookhauls, so this is a mission unaccomplished.

In the end, I think I did well on my bookish goals for 2024. I had no blogging goals, but that’s fine for me and works best for me. I have seen my blog growing in 2024, but I’ll come back to that another day.

Do you think you succeeded in your 2024 bookish goals?

  1. I have to look for my bookish goals. I think I posted some, but immediately forgot about them. I didn‘t do too badly about buying new books, I will keep track in 2025! I am with you on your last two points, I really want to tackle my TBR more seriously next year…

  2. Looks like you did pretty good overall! I also struggle with DNF’ing more and having back-up content ready 🙂

  3. I’m always trying to chip away at my tbr but somehow it’s still getting the better of me. 🙂

  4. I posted my goal wrap-up yesterday. I think I did pretty well at achieving my goals for 2024. Like you, I met my reading goal early this year but didn’t change it.

  5. These are all great things to work on… I fail at so many of them. Especially, the book hauls. I did do a tiny big better with DNF’s this year. I had 3 and usually it’s like 0 or 1. haha. Great job, on reading so many books!!! I hope that 2025 is amazing for you!

  6. Great job on your reading goals! I like your no pressure approach.

I have so many reviews that I need to post on IG. People are going to have to read about holiday books for awhile. I think I have a new approach for 2025 though.

I also think backup content is a great idea.

  7. Ooh I love this check in! Some of your goals are definitely some of mine- like cross posting, I’m VERY bad at that! And also quality over quantity – sometimes I fall into the trap of just being like, well read ANYTHING instead of choosing a book that I know I’ll love but might be a more complex or longer read.

  8. I think you did awesome with your goals! My only goal was to read all the books on my TBR shelf. I didn’t do it. 🙂

  9. Great job with your goals! Cleaning up my TBR (especially on Goodreads) will be one of my 2025 goals. Happy New Year!

  10. I think you did well on your goals, Laurie. I don’t really use any other social media except facebook for personal things, so cross posting is not even on my radar. I am hoping to clean off books from my TBR, but I have to stop adding new ones as well.

  11. Great job on your goals! I have a hard time DNF-ing a book. I only did one this year, but there were a few others that I should have.

  12. Great job on meeting your Goodreads goal! I am also good with the goals at the beginning of the year, but definitely lose motivation (or sometimes forget) as time goes.

  13. Well done on some solid progress with your 2024 goals! “Trying to write my reviews as soon as I can” is a perpetual goal of mine, haha.

  14. Well done with the goals! I know what you mean with DNF’ing too – it’s very rare I do it, and only for the absolute worst, but sometimes I do wish I’d DNF’d a book rather than carry on with it
