Top Ten Tuesday: 2024 Backlist Books Final Check-In

It’s Tuesday and the end of the year is drawing near. Since this week’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday is a freebie, I thought it would be a good time to take a look on my backlist books I wanted to read in 2024 and how well I did or did not do on this reading goal. I already did a mid-year check-in, but now it’s time for the end of the year results.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. Book Lovers by Emily Henry – I already read this book at the start of the year, but it wasn’t that much of a success.
  2. Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett – I finally read this book last month and I thoroughly enjoyed it after having to put it aside earlier this year.
  3. True Biz by Sara Novic – I read this book in spring, but it’s by far not as gripping as Girl at War.
  4. Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng – No, I still haven’t read this one yet. I’m not sure whether I will succeed in doing so before we ring in the new year.
  5. Boy Queen by George Lester – Nope, haven’t read this either. This is one I can squeeze in however, it’s not that long.
  6. The Pearl that Broke its Shell by Nadia Hashimi – No, I still haven’t read it. I’m a bit hesitant after my reading experience with When the Moon is Low earlier this year.
  7. The Challenger by Taran Matharu – Oh gosh, I haven’t read this one either.
  8. The Chase by Elle Kennedy – I added this to my “up next” queue on The Storygraph, so that’s at least some progress right?
  9. Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu – Yes, I read this one in summer finally.
  10. Rebel by Rebecca Yarros – I’m too bad at finishing series, because I haven’t read this one either.

Compared to my mid-year check-in, I only read 2 more books, which means that I have read 4 books of the initial 10 I had hoped to read.

How do you do on your backlist books? Do you keep track of them? Do you select a certain amount you definitely want to read in a year?

  1. I think most of my TBR consists of backlist books rather than new releases. And yes, I do keep track of the ones, I want to read 🙂

  2. I’d love to read the first Emily Wilde book, too, before the year ends. But knowing me I probably won’t. 😂

  3. I’ve never compiled a list of books I want to read in a year, but I have been trying to work through the backlist of books on my shelves. There are so many new and shiny books to read, too.

I think I have more backlist books compared to new releases on my TBR, but I’m awful at reading them. I do note down the books I want to read though, even if I won’t be getting to them soon. I love this idea, and honestly you’ve done a great job 🙂

  5. I’m a mood reader so just go with what catches my eye, most of the time.

  6. I set myself a target of twelve from my own bookshelf at the beginning of this year, generally books which had been lurking on the bookshelf. I have managed to read them all!

I loved Peach Blossom Spring 🍑🌸

  7. It’s always so hard for me to keep to my backlist because I’m such a big mood reader. 4/10 is actually great since it’s so hard to get to those backlist books!

  8. I have most of these on my TBR on Goodreads but realistically I don’t know if I’d reach to read them anytime soon – it’s cool that you’re tracking them annually and making progress on your backlist bit by bit! I’ve heard a lot of good things about Celeste Ng so hope you do enjoy that one!

  9. 4 out of 10 is pretty good! I have so many backlist books left to read.

  10. You did pretty well! No one seemed to like challenger too much! Thanks for dropping by my post!

  11. I feel like my TBRs also ended up as aspirations rather than achieved this year! 40% feels like a decent chunk

  12. 4/10 backlist books actually seems pretty great! I don’t keep track of my backlist reading, but I do know I always aim to read more backlist books and I also find it pretty difficult to do, so I don’t think I’d actually reach 4/10 🙂

  13. I really like this post topic. You did great with reading backlist books this year, probably a lot better than I did. I’m really glad that you enjoyed Emily Wilde, too!

  14. I made a list of 24 backlist books I wanted to read this year and I have only read 6. I am going to roll it over next year and try to read one a month, but we shall see. I have so many backlist books, but new ones keep edging them out.

  15. Four out of ten is pretty good! I can’t stick to lists at all lol.

  16. I don’t think 4 of 10 is bad. It’s pretty good in my opinion. New, exciting books are always popping up.I don’t keep a backlist books list because if I haven’t read them by now, I’m not likely to.

  17. I’m also so bad at reading backlist books. I get so distracted by the new and shiny things.

  18. I loved that Heather Fawcett book and I need more asap!

  19. I tried to do a backlist TBR jar this year and failed miserably! But I’m going to try again next year😁

  20. Great idea of post! I’m almost afraid to look at my backlist…

  21. This is a good idea for a post. I read Book Lovers this year and wasn’t too impressed by it. I try to read from TBR mountain before reading anything new but it doesn’t always happen.

  22. I loved Emily Wildes! I’ve just read an arc of book 3 and I’m still in love with Wendell!!!

  23. I love that you’re focusing on your backlist, good luck with your reading for the end of the year 🙂 I still want to read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries! And to answer your question, I don’t actively separate out my backlist from new releases.
