Top Ten Tuesday: YA One Book Wonders

It’s Tuesday yet again and after taking a break from Top Ten Tuesday last week, it’s time to get back to it. This week’s topic originally is Covers with [item] on them (you name the item) but since I’m too visually impaired to judge a book by it’s cover, I thought of something else. We all know the phenomenon of One Hit Wonders right? Artists who have one big hit and are less successful or completely disappear from the radar afterwards. Unfortunately, this can happen to books as well. Side note: authors might have written more books after that one big title, but they might not be seen by me or in my country at all. I therefore focus on One Book Wonders in the Netherlands. Let’s take a look to what I found!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. A. J. Betss – I’ve read Zac & Mia back in 2017 and seen the series in 2019. I really enjoyed this novel back then, but haven’t seen anything by this author afterwards.
  2. Hayley Barker – Back in 2017 or 2018, the “Showstopper” duology got published. This was during the time that books surrounding a circus were really popular. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book unfortunately and therefore never read the second one. However, I haven’t seen this author publish anything else after this duology.
  3. Tomi Adeyemi – yes, this author finished an entire trilogy, but only the first book was incredibly successful. So that counts. The entire series has been translated to Dutch, although I believe it might be for the sake of finishing a series. This final book has taken way and way too long.
  4. Sara Holland – this author published another duology after Everless, but only the first novel in this first duology stood out.
  5. Danielle Younge-Ullman – Apparently this author wrote another book in 2020, but this wasn’t picked up by many readers it seems. It definitely didn’t get a Dutch translation. I enjoyed her 2018 novel Everything Beautiful is Not Ruined, something I didn’t expect since this is such a hidden gem.
  6. Suzanne Collins – Technically not a one book wonder, but this author keeps returning – with the possible danger of milking this world out – to Panem, where her successful “The Hunger Games” series is set. I wonder what else she can write.
  7. Jennifer Brown – Probably another author who published more books, but I read Hate List in Dutch at the time I hardly read in English. I haven’t read or heard about any books by this author after.
  8. Donna Freitas – An author I actuallly haven’t read any book from, but the first book in the Unplugged series – Unplugged – was quite popular overhere. Even this popular to appear at YALFest, the biggest YA event we had until the last edition in 2019. I believe the second book got translated as well, but wasn’t so popular.
  9. Amy Ewing – This author appeared at the same event alongside Donna Freitas, but after the “The Jewel” series, there was not much success with the other dulogy. It never got a translation anyway. I definitely enjoyed earlier mentioned series though.
  10. Samantha Shannon – Believe it or not, but this author was a One Book Wonder over here. Her series “the Bone Season” hasn’t even been finished, only the first two books are available in Dutch. I therefore never started this series. Priory of the Orange Tree hasn’t been picked up at all. This might be because it’s a huge one, but who knows… This author has been to the Netherlands recently for the week of the English book though.

Have you read any of these authors yourself?

  1. It’s interesting to see what books/authors are, or rather aren’t, getting translated into other languages. I hope you have a great week.

  2. I haven’t read anything by these authors and have only heard of two (Suzanne Collins and Samantha Shannon).

  3. Such an interesting idea! The only authors I have heard of in this list are Samantha Shannon and Suzanne Collins, though I haven’t read their books either 🙂

  4. Great topic choice! I don’t recognize anyones name but since you told me what Suzanne Collins wrote, I do know the books, just not read them. No plans to either.

  5. I find it so interesting how some authors have multiple successful books and others may only have one. If only every book received all of the attention it deserved.

  6. I’ve been wanting to read The Bone Season for years, I have to make it a priority now

  7. Great topic! Though I love The Hunger Games books, I am indeed curious to see her write something else entirely.

Interesting topic! I hadn’t thought about applying the One Hit Wonder idea to authors.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

  9. Interesting about Samantha Shannon – she’s doing so well I feel like I see another Europe deal every other week for her!

I totally agree about Adeyemi though (and the second book was not good IMO)

  10. Great topic choice! I haven’t heard of the majority of these authors, which just proves your point 🙂

    Happy TTT!

  11. I would also like to know what else Collins can write?! Breakaway from Hunger Games!! Great topic

  12. I do wonder if Suzanne Collins will ever write anything outside of The Hunger Games. Bet she’s living pretty well off the profits. Honestly impressed that people are still interested and new movies are coming out after all this time.

  13. Great list! As much as I enjoyed The Hunger Games series, I have also wondered what else Suzanne Collins is capable of – it seems a disservice to limit herself to just Panem.

I also found the first Tomi Adeyemi book interesting, but I couldn’t get through the second and lost interest completely.
