Top Ten Tuesday: How My Reading Habits Have Changed Over Time

It’s Tuesday once again – yeah, the weeks fly by – and that means time for another Top Ten Tuesday. This one however is a bit different and difficult, because this topic screams for a Let’s Talk Bookish discussion. But we don’t have that, so it will be a list instead. It’s an interesting topic to look further into though. This particular topic is How My Reading Habits Have Changed Over Time and was suggested by Lydia @ Lydia Schoch. If you like some challenging posts and books, you should definitely check out Lydia’s blog. My reading habits definitely changed overtime, but I’m not sure if I can make it to 10 ways.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  1. My genre preferences changed – I remember that in my childhood, apart from the obvious children’s books, I wanted to get challenged more. So, I read books that were a bit above my age as well. I was a kid in the 90s and 00s, Young Adult wasn’t a real genre, definitely not as big as we know now. So, I read more general fiction and thrillers. Naturally, I got a genre bore-out for the thrillers, I already found the clue soon enough. Furthermore, thrillers tend to get a bit too formulaic over the years. Then, I was reading a lot of YA, but I find myself moving away from that age range either. Why? I’m in my 30s and I find it hard to relate to books in a school setting nowadays. Bummer, because YA still dares to address challenging themes.
  2. I listen to audiobooks more often – Look, I hated audiobooks when I was younger. I was dependent on the library for the blind and visually impaired, so apart from the fact that they were more a year or longer behind on the hypes and I could finally listen to the books when they weren’t popular anymore, the audiobooks were HO-RRI-BLE. Most of them. There were some good ones, but let’s face it, they aren’t narrated by professional narrators or actors. These libraries don’t have the funding for that, so they are dependent on volunteers. Again, there were pretty good ones, but I’ve returnt books often enough for the petty reason that I couldn’t stand the narration. This changed when I discovered both Storytel and Audible alike. I still have my narration preferences, but I find myself enjoying audiobooks more and more over the years.
  3. I don’t read braille books anymore – As a kid until well in my 20s, I preferred to read books in braille. But these are HUGE. Imagine Harry Potter or the later Twilight books in braille, enormous. Huge piles. They always came in the mail, so it sometimes occurred that we had trouble entering our home because of my books LOL. Now, it’s impossible to get braille books because post boxes in apartment buildings are quite small. Fortunately, there are e-books and screen readers, so I can read the books when they have their momentum and not years later.
  4. I needed to divide my reading time – Life happens, so instead of reading a lot after school or university, I have to read after work. I therefore read on the commute, but that same commute has been shorter than it was until a few months ago. So, it could happen that I don’t read much for days. Chores don’t do themselves unfortunately.
  5. I obsess less over reading challenges – Okay, in my early book blogging days, I was OBSESSED with reading challenges and extremely determined to hit my reading goal. This kind of took away the joy of reading for me and that’s definitely not what we want right? So, this year I lowered my challenge and just set a reading goal for the monthly stats and yearly overview. And guess what? I already surpassed my reading goal by 100%.
  6. I’m not afraid to DNF – I’m not afraid to DNF books I don’t like, I never did this until a few years ago. Funny, one of my reading goals for either 2023 or 2024 was to DNF less. Or this means that I choose my reading material more carefully now.
  7. I read multiple books at once – This is something that started when I was still obsessing over reading goals, starting multiple books at once. I still do this, but I notice I did less so in the past few months. At the moment, I have two books I’m currently reading, but that hasn’t been the case for a while. However, I still enjoy reading multiple books at once.
  8. Rereading books – Unthinkable! In the past at least, now I’m rereading books if I want to. I don’t always track those rereads because they ill count towards my reading goal and that’s something I actually do not want to happen. I often reread books in another language. In English first and Dutch later, or vise versa. And only if it wouldn’t cost me extra money.
  9. Tracking my reading – This is something I never did before 2015. That was the year I signed up to Goodreads, only to forget about it soon after. I started to use it more actively in 2016, and even more so when I started book blogging in 2017.
  10. Not peeking at the final chapter – Okay okay, confession time. Back in the day, until quite recently though, I was way too curious for the ending of a book. So, when I was reading said book, I… skipped ahead and read the final chapter because my curiosity got the better of me. I still do sometimes when I’m not sure whether I should DNF a book or not, but I find myself doing this stupid habit of mine less and less. I will always stay curious though.

Oh wow, I indeed made it to 10! Have your reading habits changed overtime and how?

  1. I never used to read more than one book at a time until I became a book blogger. Also, I still can’t do more than 2 or 3 audiobooks a year. Great list, it’s always interesting to see how our reading habits have changed over the years.

  2. I also used to peek at the last page haha! Glad we’re out of that habit now, because it did ruin it!

    1. Oh sometimes it made me want to read the book faster!

  3. It was great reading about your reading habits! I feel the same way about audiobooks, but I can only read one book at a time for now 🙂

  4. I do read more than one book at a time but it’s usually one physical book and one book on my Kindle – but they have to be different genres otherwise I get mixed up!

  5. Wouldn’t it be great if chores did do themselves? I guess for people who can afford that kind of help they do. LOL

I can read multiple nonfiction at once, not that I’m reading that any longer, but I cannot read multiple fiction. That confuses me because everything I read is similar. Right now it’s either Christmas romances or Amish romances.

I could never peek! It would ruin the book for me. Okay, maybe if I think the book isn’t good anyway but other than that, no.

  6. Thank you for the shoutout.

To be honest, I still sometimes peek at the endings of books. Ha!

  7. I love to reel! I used to reread only parts or my favorite scenes, so I don’t count that in my annual tracking, but the last few years I do reread the whole book, so its part of the annul challenge

  8. I’ve also shifted a bit away from the YA genre and I listen to way more audiobooks than I used to. But DNF’ing books is still a struggle for me, I need to work on that for sure 🙂

  9. I absolutely adored audiobooks! I wish I had time to listen to more of them!

  10. According to Goodreads, I have four books on the go right now. One is an audiobook, one is an ebook, and the other two are physical books. They’re from different genres, too. I can’t read two books from the same genre at the same time.

  11. I almost never re-read, although I’ve done it three times this year because one of my eight book clubs was reading a book I’d previously read, but I needed a refresher because it’s been a few years. There are just so many books I want to read that I don’t have time for re-reading when it’s not necessary. Although if I spoke two languages I might re-read more, because I imagine books hit a bit different in different languages.

I hope you have a great week.

  12. Great list! I am jealous of your ability to read multiple books at once. I wish I had that skill!

  13. I remember when Audiobooks were borrowing like 10 discs from the library haha. And yes, the narration has come SO FAR in recent times. So many really big name and professional audiobook narrators these days. Makes a big difference.

  14. I’m glad technology is helping those with visual impairments have better access to books, especially more current ones.

Even with professionally-narrated audiobooks, I get annoyed by certain narrators. If I can’t stand their voice, I DNF the audiobook and look for the book in print instead. I do have a bunch of narrators that I love, so I always look for their books.

    Happy TTT!

  15. Tracking your reads is a game changer! I do love doing it to know what I read and also remember what I thought about each one by writing a quick review on GR!

  16. I’m not sure when it started but I do have multiple books going (even now!). I think I prefer one at a time because overall I feel as though I’m more “efficient” reading that way, but for some reason I don’t listen to myself. 😉 Thanks for visiting my list today.

  17. I’m right with you on narrator – a poor narrator can definitely decrease my desire to listen. Also, I’ve learned to DNF as well. Big improvement!

  18. Definitely feel one when it comes to narration preferences. There are many audiobooks I started and stopped because there was something about the narrator’s voice that really turned me off.

  19. Yeah, not skipping ahead to the last chapter can be really hard sometimes. LOL. I’m guilty of doing that many times. Have a great weekend, Laurie!

  20. Ooh nice ones! I remember, I never really used to peek at the last page intentionally. I was more so wanting to see how many more pages I had to finishing, but there were times I ended up spoiling the story because evidentially I’d catch something about the final words and then I knew what happened in the end. I don’t do that anymore for sure! Lol.

    Thanks for visiting my TTT!

  21. Great list. I don’t obsess about reading challenges, but I do enjoy them. I don’t always complete them but I’m okay with that. I just like doing them. I have to get back to audiobooks. I enjoyed them during my commute to work, but now that I don’t work, there’s no commute.
