Top Ten Tuesday: Mid-Year 2024 Reading Goals Check-In

At the start of 2024, I compiled several posts with several themes. I already looked back on how I am doing with my backlist books I want to read this year, and I also did the Mid-Year Freak Out Tag. However, I also compiled a Top Ten Tuesday post with a list of Bookish Goals (I just found out there are 9 instead of 10 oops). So, why not check in to these since this week’s topic Books With Color On the Cover is not for me?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

  • Read 50 books – I set my goal this low at the start of this year because I’ve read significantly less the past two years and I always have a major reading slump in the fall/winter. So, I didn’t want the pressure anymore. I just set a goal for the stats anyway. I’m happy to report that I already made this first goal, I surpassed it with 16 books. My total books read is on 66 now and that’s much, much more than I read this time last year.
  • Chosing quality over quantity – I think I partially succeed in this goal so far. Especially the first few months, I enjoyed most of the books I’ve read. This translates to my ratings being quite high. These past few months however, I have the feeling I’m succeeding less, especially in May and June. Maybe it’s just bad luck, let’s hope this changes again. I still try my best though, but I notice myself drifting to easier reads during spring and summer.
  • DNF more – I actually had to check my Goodreads shelf for this, but out of the 66 books, I DNF 6. I think that’s pretty reasonable. I’ve become quite picky in my reading material and it shows, although you can’t always be lucky.
  • Cross posting my reviews – I keep failing in this and this is definitely because of laziness. I have my blog, so I don’t feel the urge to cross post my reviews onto other platforms. Sometimes I do, but I forget it more often than not.
  • Trying to write my reviews as soon as I can – I think I’m getting better at this, especially for this blog. My Dutch blog is falling a bit behind, but overall I’m succeeding.
  • Having back-up content – No, this goal is far from met. I often don’t have the energy (and time/attention span) to write several blog posts in one sitting and am often already done after just one. Especially on work days.
  • Cleaning out the TBR – I’m getting better at this, even though I keep adding new books. This year, I read several older books though, with alternating success.
  • Buying less books – Uhm nope, this is a never-ending story. However, I’m getting better at reading them quite soon after hauling them.
  • Finally accept that hypes are mostly not for me – I’m hardly aware of what’s hyped at the moment and what’s to come out, so that definitely helps. However, I have to say that I’ve been lucky with most of the earlier hyped books I’ve read, so that’s a good thing.

Overall, I think I’m succeeding in most of my goals vor 2024 and that I’m on track. How are you doing on your 2024 bookish goals?

Good work on the ones you have achieved. That book buying one is tricky 😄

  2. Definitely jealous that you set some of these goals for yourself bc there are some on here that are so tough for me (like having backup content and knowing that hyped books will more likely than not disappoint me lol). But same as you, I didn’t expect that I’d get so much reading done this year, that I also just hit my goal of 60 books. 🙂

  3. Having back-up content is hard for me as well. I’m doing somewhat better on writing reviews as soon as I can, but it’s tough though.

  4. Good job with your goals so far!

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  5. I always try to write my reviews “right away” or within that first week. Most of the time I think I succeed at this though unless it’s a review copy, I rarely cross post. 😉 I love the quality over quantity goal. I’ve worked hard to learn what I’ll (higher chance than not) like so I think that kind of goes with that goal. YAY for meeting your reading goal, too. That’s awesome. Thanks for visiting my website today!

  6. DNFing is something that I’ve really gotten better at over the years and it’s something I am always encouraging. It’s so easy to force yourself to continue a book you aren’t enjoying. Glad that you’ve been able to draw that line.

  7. I have learned that if I don’t write a review immediately, a review will probably not be posted — so these days I often do a “short round” which is a series of paragraph reviews for books I can’t digest enough, or be inspired enough by, to produce full reviews for. Case in point: in this bookish resolutions post from 2016, eight years ago, I posted six books I really wanted to re-read and review. I’ve managed two of them.

I know how you feel on crossposting. I do it for goodreads in batches. Thanks for dropping by earlier!

    1. I try to do batches, but I’m just too lazy 😂

  8. Quality over quantity is important. I also am done after writing up just one blog post, blogging is time consuming. I write my reviews as soon as I can also or I’ll forget some of the characters and plot. I start my review post when I start a book, then keep editing the draft until I’m done reading and publish my review.

    1. I’m actually playing around with my reviews a bit, because I’m struggling. I can’t write “loose” ones anymore it seems, but a structured, set format is also feeling a bit “stiff” to me.

  9. I haven’t looked too closely at my goals for the year recently. Though, I do need to work on a mid-year check-in soon.

  10. Congrats on smashing the reading goal! And yes, the hype one is real – trends can’t fit everyone and I’m getting to be happy with that (though I still like to complain to my friends about how the stuff I love never gets enough love!)

I love your goals! I feel you too about the back up content, it’s just so much work! Quality over quantity and enjoyment is so important here

  12. Balancing blogging with work is definitely a challenge for me. I also set my reading goal lower than usual this year, and I’m also finding myself drifting towards “easier” reads as the year goes on–but, I’m still enjoying them, and that’s really why I read, so I’d consider it a win! Good luck on your goals for the second half of 2024!

  13. Congrats on the ones you have achieved so far! I also forever fail the crossposting challenge. Every year I tell myself I’m going to keep up with posting reviews to GR and challenge links and stuff and every year…..I do not do that.

    1. It’s just… We have our blog, so why spending time on posting on several other platforms as well? Blogging is already quite time consuming 😀

  14. Wow, you’ve read a lot! I’m in a reading slump right now, so I’ve fallen pretty far behind in my goals, but hopefully I can get back into reading soon 🙂

  15. These are awesome goals! 66 books is such a great number and we are only halfway through the year! Yep, hype books have been a lot of misses for me lately.

  16. Sounds like you’re doing great at your goals! I also made a goal early in the year not to buy any more books, but that didn’t last long. Ha ha. The struggle is real.

    Happy TTT!

  17. Not every topic appeals to all of us and I often swerve from the given one, so we all understand.

Some good goals there, I wish I could adhere to the buying fewer books but I guess I am more a book gatherer. And they always need a good home. LOL

  18. I totally understand the never-ending TBR feeling! One of my goals was to read more books I own but I have also added to the collection so it feels like I haven’t really done that. Maybe someday it’ll happen XD

I like that you used this week to check in with your goals! What a neat idea 🙂

  19. I really like the idea of this topic! It sounds like you’re doing pretty well on a lot of your goals.

  20. That’s awesome you’ve read so much already and that it sounds like you’re choosing quality over quantity!

  21. Having back up content is always a struggle, I try to have AT LEAST 10 posts scheduled at a time, in case I get sick or in case mom life takes over, but I struggle with juggling blogging, reading, watching movies, homeschooling, sleeping, being a mom, being a wife, etc. So sometimes it just doesn’t happen.
My reading goal I’m doing great at, I’ve had to up my goal a few times already. Doing reviews? No, that’s not great. I always read more than I can review so I’m trying to review only books that are under 5k reviews on goodreads or that I just REALLY loved.
