Mid-Year Freak Out Tag: 2024

It’s that time of year again, we’re at the halfway mark of 2024. We all know what that means right? Yes, this means it’s time for the Mid-Year Freak Out tag. But really, where has this year gone so far? I mean, it flew by so fast! Unlike last year, I’ve read more. When I’m writing this post, I’ve already read 65 books from my goal of 50. I’m not increasing my goal, I just set one for the stats anyway. I also had a few DNF’s this year. Well, let’s take a look into this first half of 2024 with this Mid-Year Freak Out tag!

1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2024?

Oh this is definitely not hard at all! There was one, just one, book I’ve been anticipating for the past two years and it finally got published this year. I’m talking about House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas. I immediately started listening to the audiobook when Audible delivered it to my device and I spent every possible second listening. It was a straight 5-star read and I already knew this beforehand.

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2024?

This is a tough question! I’m the worst in continuing, let alone finishing series. And I’m not counting rereads for this tag. So, I have to go with De geheimen van Maxton Hall College by Mona Kasten. No, this book is not available in English.

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To?

I guess I’m quite good in keeping up with new releases this year. Not that I kknow what will be released, but if I’m interested, I seem to be reading them quite soon.

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2024?

I haven’t even looked up the books that are to be released in the second half of the year, so I really can’t answer this question. But I pre-ordered The Songbird & the Heart of Stone by Carissa Broadbent, so does that count?

5. Biggest Disappointment?

I unfortunately have read several disappointing books. I think The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo (DNF) and Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli are the biggest disappointments for me. It’s a coming of age novel, but you barely get to know the characters besides them being queer. Apparently, this first half of 2024 seems to be quite mediocre again when looking into my ratings so far.

6. Biggest Surprise?

By far, Dearest Clementine by Lex Martin. It has been on my TBR for years and I was about to give up because I just couldn’t get into it, but I’m glad I pushed through. It’s so much more than I initially thought!

7. Favorite New Author?

Well, I haven’t read many new-to-me authors so far, and the ones I have read, I am not able to judge as my favorite new author yet.

8. Newest Fictional Crush?

Like I said last year, I don’t do fictional crushes.

9. Newest Favorite Character?

Like last year, I don’t have a new favorite character either. Oops. Many characters feel so generic to me lately and I don’t know why.

10. Book That Made You Cry?

I still am not a book cryer.

11. Book That Made You Happy?

I have read several 5-stars so far, but most of them are rereads. So I actually knew the storyline already. And I’m just not the type for plain happy books, they feel so shaloow to me. I need an emotional ride with depth.

12. Favorite Book To Movie Adaptation You Saw This Year?

I cancelled all my streaming services, so no tv or movies for me. They bore me to dead within about 5-10 minutes, so it’s a waste of money and time.

13. Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year?

I’ve written many reviews this year already, but I can’t really choose a favorite. I have been experimenting with my review formats like last year. I still can’t find a format that will stick with me for a longer period of time, they bore me out so quic..

14. Most Beautiful Book You Bought So Far This Year?

I don’t buy physical books and I just can’t judge books by their covers due to my visual impairment.

15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year?

Well, that are a lot of them. I don’t mention any here because I’m the absolute worst in sticking to reading plans, so I don’t want to jinx it LOL. Same answer as last year actually.

Oh wait, that’s it! How has your first half of this year been? You can take this tag if you want to, because I’m not taggging anybody. This tag is very popular, so I don’t know who is planning to do this themselves or already has done it.

  1. I have prepared my post the other day and will publish it soon. Nice to see others are participating, as well. It’s always nice to see what others are writing and that they have the same trouble with some of the questions as I do.

Same as you, I am not a (book) cryer and I don’t really get crushes.

  2. I just published my post for this tag over the weekend! House of Flame and Shadow has been my favorite read so far this year as well, and I was quite disappointed with The Familiar too.

  3. This is such a good tag! I’ve loved reading your answers <3
I hope the next six months will be good months for you!
I'm very upset The Familiar isn't getting love – i probably won't pick it up at all now that everyone has been disappointed by it. It's a shame, i so very wanted to love Leigh Bardugo's work…
