Top Ten Tuesday: Did I Read My Winter TBR?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week officially has a different topic, but it’s not for me at all. So I thought it’s a good time to reflect on my winter 2023 TBR. I will post my Spring TBR in 2 weeks, so the verdict might still change. Links will direct you to my available reviews.

  • House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas – Oh yes, I absolutely read it and I loved every second of it!
  • Glow by Raven Kennedy – No, I haven’t read this. I thought I was ready for it, but apparently not as I prioritized other books.
  • Flawless by Elsie Silver – This is the first book I finished in 2024 and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
  • Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood – I also read this one and I surprisingly enjoyed it a lot!
  • Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare – Yes, and oh boy did it disappoint me.
  • Twisted Hate by Ana Huang – Although this is not my most favorite book in the series, I enjoyed it enough to still have had a good time with it.
  • Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu – No and I have no excuse as of why not. I’m sure this one will be picked up in the upcoming weeks though!
  • A Touch of Ruin by Scarlett St. Clair – No and I have a legitimate reason for this. I’ve read the first book, A Touch of Darkness in Dutch and have this one in Dutch as well, but I found the first book quite annoying to read in terms of either writing or translation. Furthermore, it’s best to read A Game of Fate before this one and the books from Hades’ POV within the saga are not up for translation as of yet. So I got that one in English last month and I want to read it first before diving into A Touch of Ruin.
  • Hallowed Ground by Rebecca Yarros – No, I just haven’t had the time to pick it up. Probably will do on my holiday.
  • The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath – I’ve tried, tried and tried, but I had to DNF this one. I didn’t understand it at all.

Verdict: Out of the 10 books I’ve listed for this winter, I’ve picked up 6 and finished 5. That’s a good score I believe! Actually I’m having fun with this, so expect a Spring 2023 TBR refelction post anytime soon.

Have you set yourself a winter TBR and how did you do on it?

  5. Looks like you did a pretty good job! Unfortunate to hear that Sword Catcher wasn’t that great–that’s also on my TBR though not my official Winter TBR. I’d have to look back at that list, but I think I read most of them. I also DNFed The Bell Jar, many years ago.

  6. You did so well with your TBR! One of these days I’ll pick up Sword Catcher, but I just know it will disappoint.

    1. Actually the characters and world building are really great! The storyline just doesn’t add up to these. If you’re curious, the title is hyperlinked to my review.

  7. 6 out of 10 I think you did it, congrats 🙂

    Great job on your tbr!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  9. Well done! So far, my Winter TBR has been a bit of a challenge! I’ve finished 3, DNF 2, and reading 1. It doesn’t help that I hit a mental block at the end of January, and my brain was struggling with the written word. I’m slowly getting through it, but I don’t think I’ll get more of my TBR done. Oh well!

  10. That is indeed a good score! I only read 4 out of 10, and I don’t think I’ll be able to pick up the others until much later.

  11. I’m not nearly this organized with my TBR. I should totally organize the books I want to read by season. 6 (or 5) out of 10 is pretty good!

  12. I really appreciated The Bell Jar because it read like a book in the historical genre but it was really written to be a current day novel. It also is thought to be semi-autobiographical. She was so unwell and it showed in the life of her main character.

  13. I’d say 6 out of 10 is a brilliant score for picking up the seasonal TBR books! I usually only hit 2 or 3 when I go back and check…

  14. 6 out of 10 sounds great to me, and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed most of them too!

  15. I would love to reflect back upon what I’d planned to read as you did in this post.
