Review: Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

Usually, I don’t post reviews in series so short after one another. Usually, I don’t read books in series so short after one another either. But, after finishing Crown of Midnight, I just couldn’t help myself and I simply had to continue my reread with Heir of Fire. I just couldn’t resist. So, this is a rarity that you can find two reviews from books within one series on my blog soo soon after each other! Beware for spoilers though, because there sure are from the pervious books.

My review

Again, this was such a wild and crazy ride! I noticed that I’ve forgotten a lot, which isn’t that uncommon at all since it has been six whole years since I’ve read this book for the firt time. Also, things are worded differently in the book’s original language, so it was such a pleasure to revisit this world. I keep discovering new-to-me or lost-to-me information.

This book picks up shortly after the ending of Crown of Midnight. Celaena sailed off to Wendlyn to get to safety and to learn more about her fae herritage. This journey took several weeks and now she’s trying to find a way to get to queen Maeve, her aunt. She encounters prince Rowan Whitethorn instead. In the end, she makes it to Maeve, who denies her access to Doronell, the city of the fae. Instead, she has to keep training with Rowan at a fortress to learn more about her powers. However, she’s still grieving the friends she lost and still doesn’t want to face her herritage. Meanwhile in Adarlan, Dorian is trying to keep his magic under control and seeks help form a healer. Chaol tries to avoid Dorian as much as possible and finds ways to support Celaena in her mission. Then there’s also Manon and the Blackbeak clan, who have to train Wyverns, gifted by the king of Adarlan. And last but not least, Aedion visits Adarlan on the king’s order. All these storylinees come together in one way or another, but how? That’s what we discover in this book, although it’s just the beginning.

Since there are so many characters involved who are scattered over multiple places, this book is quite heavy on POV switching. I don’t mind this at all, because everything is connected to each other and we need all those smaller pieces to get the bigger picture. I believe this installment in the series is much more of a fundament to the entire story than the previous two books. Although these were investing already, Heir of Fire is even more. I finished a good portion of it in one day, can you imagine?

Maas has a way of discussing heavier themes in her books. This is no different here. Celaelna is grieving a lot and therefore is quite depressed. She is bitter, but her training with Rowan urges her to start to come to terms with the situation. Slowly, she starts her healing journey. On the other hand, Dorian is in the midst of navigating a life with magic which he has to keep secret from his father, the king. This makes the book quite tense, because you know this only could go wrong. However, all of this has been written well and so is the character development.

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas has been a great read overall. I was sucked in from start to finish and rediscovered new information. Also, the introduction of new characters was great, as well as the character development for our familiar faces. This book is the actual fundament for the entire series, even more so than the first two books.
