It has been a while since I’ve done a booktag! Now, as the end of the year is looming, I just wanted to do some quick posts and a tag is perfect for this purpose. So, I scrolled through other blogs and I found the Smash or Pass booktag on Chonky Books Review. However, this tag is originally created by Becky @ Becky’s Book Blog. She based it on the smash or pass BookTok trend, and went through some of the relatively controversial bookish choices. There are no rules for this tag, just have fun with it, as long as you link back to the creator (Becky) and the person who tagged you or the blog that you saw this on if you want to join in!
Bookish Tropes
PASS – I mean, they are nice in some cases, but lately they seem to be overdone and therefroe there barely seem to be unique books left there anymore. I see so many books with many similarities to other books. However, some tropes work, some don’t. Personally, I HATE the fake dating trope!
Alternating POV
SMASH – Books with alternating POV work really well to get a good overview of the story. Also, you get the story from multiple POVs and sometimes yo know more as a reader than the actual characters.
Ambiguous Endings
PASS – Be straight forward please, I’m too tired to fill in the blanks.
Non/Fiction
PASS – I don’t like nonfiction, I’m more of a fiction girl.
Historical Setting
SMASH – These books mainly get me out of a reading slump.
Morally Grey Characters
SMASH – I actually don’t really know, but they can surprise you I guess.
First Person POV
SMASH – Absolutely! It’s easier to feel connected to the characters when the book is written in first person POV, second or third person POV feel more distant somehow.
Audiobooks
SMASH – Oh definitely! I listen to a lot of them, they make reading so much easier. Fun fact, I will be discussing them tomorrow.
Re-Reading
SMASH – It really depends on my mood and the book though.
Classic Novels
PASS – I find them hard to read and especially in English since that’s not my native language. They are written in a different way than most modern books so yeah.
Annotating
PASS – I only read digital or aduiobooks, so I don’t do this.
Cracking Book Spines
PASS – See the question above.
Smut
SMASH – It depends on the amount of it though. If it’s just smut and no plot or character development, it’s a hard pass for me.
Character Driven Books
SMASH – These are often the most interesting to read since you are able to witness character growth and the plot is there to support them in their journey. With plotdriven books, characters don’t grow as much and that automatically makes these books less interesting.
Past/Present Split Timeline
SMASH – Although the past timeline is often much more intriguing to me than the present one.
Heavy World Building
SMASH/PASS – It really depends on the book and genre. For fantasy it’s necessary, but I don’t want it to become an infodump since my attention span is not made for huge books nowadays.
