Top Ten Tuesday: Did I read my Fall 2023 TBR?

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Yes, another check-in post! Last wek I checked in on my Backlist TBR, but I didn’t realize this week is a freebie. However, next week we’ll be putting books on our Winter TBR, so let’s see how I did on my Fall TBR first.

  1. The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by S.A. Chakraborty – Yes, I read this book. Although I enjoyed the setup of the story and the amount of research the author clearly has done, pirates are not really my cup of tea still. (click here for my full review)
  2. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus – I didn’t put it out there on my tracking apps, but I’ve tried and made it to chapter 5 before I decided this book is not for me. The writing is not for me, neither are the main character and the humor. It’s not funny at all! Also, I expected to get a decent historical fiction and this is clearly not that.
  3. Fall of Ruin and Wrath by Jennifer L. Armentrout – I actually read this soon after I put the original post up. I’m not sure what’s happening to this author, because this book was not what i’m used to read from her. I mean, it’s so slow and only picks up around the 70% mark. However, I’m still curious for the sequel. (click here for my full review)
  4. Things We Hide from the Light by lucy Score – Yes, I read this one as well. I enjoyed it, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of Lina. Nash shows an immense character growth though! (click here for my full review)
  5. Glow by Raven Kennedy – No, I’veread too much fantasy lately.
  6. The Bell jar by Sylvia Plath – No, I actually forgot I put this on my TBR!
  7. Falling Hard for the Royal Guard by Megan Clawson – Yes and I really disliked this one. (click here for my full review)
  8. November by Thomas Olde Heuvelt – I read this one as well but I won’t be reviewing it here since it’s a Dutch book. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it that much, I liked his other books better.
  9. Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros – Of course I’ve read this! Although it sometimes was a bit too long, I enjoyed every second of this read. (click here for my full review)
  10. Ruthless Fae by Caroline Peckham and Suzanne Valenti – No, I haven’t read this one either because of the amount of fantasy I’ve consumed these past 3 months.

Verdict: I’ve read 6 out of 10! I don’t count Lessons in Chemistry because I’ve only made it to chapter 5. I did better than I thought, considering getting Covid and a reading slump at the same time.

How did you do on your fall TBR?

  1. Books I place on my TBR list each season start screaming at me to pick them up/finish them.

My TTT Freebie is a Christmas playlist

  2. I also liked Iron Flame, but I loved Lessons in Chemistry. Here’s my TTT: https://bonniereadsandwrites.com/2023/12/05/top-ten-tuesday-freebie-week/

  3. I’m interested in Lessons in Chemistry since the show came out (and it’s quite popular too?). But I did read a review which suggested that it was more of a darker feminist thing than the comfort lit that the packaging seems to suggest…

    1. Maybe it works better as a show anyway. I was expecting to get a historical fiction, which I usually love, but this one is too feminist for me. And not funny at all.

The Bell Jar was really good. Hope you like it whenever you may read it.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  5. Sounds like you read or at least tried more of it than you didn’t! My fall TBR was all “mount tbr” related. I’ve been trying to reduce/destroy my pile of unread books and am 80% of the way there. Just have to read 10+ books in the next 25 days, no biggie.. :p For my list, I went with favorite new-to-me movies.

  6. 6 of 10 read with a 7th tried and DNF sounds like great progress to me! Happy reading!

Here’s my TTT post this week.

I’d like to read Lessons in Chemistry at some point. Thanks for visiting my TTT. You requested that I add “alt text” to my post for the photos. I’m not very techy, but I will try to figure it out. 🙂

  8. 6 out of 10 is good! Great job!

  9. 6/10 is pretty great still!

  10. It’s a really good idea to make a check in like this, must take up the idea! Sorry you didn’t like Lessons in Chemistry, it appealed to me. I loved Iron Flame, couldn’t care how long it was, money’s worth obtained!!

  11. I’m glad you liked Iron Flame.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  12. I loved Iron Flame – I just eat that up and honestly, I can overlook some of the minor things I have because I just enjoy the world, characters and dragons so much.

I DNF’d Amina al-Sirafi. It gave me a headache. I think it was the print in my copy but I just couldn’t get into it really.

    1. I’m listening to the audiobook edition of Chakraborty’s book right now and I’m really enjoying it. The production is excellent!

  13. I’m sorry you didn’t like Lessons in Chemistry. I went into it blind with no expectation, and I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it very much. Then I went and read reviews and was surprised by how many people didn’t like it because it was overhyped?

Iron Flame was one of my anticipated reads too, and I really liked it!

  14. I love that you’re keeping accountable to your TBR. I fail miserably at that.

    Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday.

  15. 6/10 is great! I never do that well with my seasonal TBR lists. LOL

    Happy TTT!

  17. The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi and Iron Flame are both on my tbr, I’m hoping to get to them soon.
