Let’s Talk Bookish: Reading Nonfiction

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted by Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Since April 2022, the meme moved to another host, Aria @ Book Nook Bits. Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and share their love by visiting each other’s posts.

This week’s topic is an interesting one, reading nonfiction. I don’t read this genre for multiple reasons. Thanks to Hannah @ Hannah’s Library for suggesting this topic!

Prompts: Do you read a lot of nonfiction? What is the last nonfiction book you read? Are there any nonfiction books you always recommend to others? What are your favorite nonfiction subjects to read about?

Do you read a lot of nonfiction?

Well, no. In 2023, i guess I’ve only read less than a handfull of nonfiction books so far and that’s not without reason. Reading time equals relaxing time to me and reading nonfiction often feels like a chore. I want to read fiction to just leave daily life for a while. I’ve tried nonfiction in the past, but I was so, so, so bored and I zoned out a lot. Also, English is not my first language, and academic or Oxford English is often being used in this type of books, accompanied by charts and figures. The latter ones often don’t translate well through voiceover or any type of screenreader, so therefore I miss important information. Furthermore, Oxford English is much different from conversational English and the language used in fiction books which makes nonfiction harder to understand. I believe nonfiction reads best in your native language when you feel the need to read one, so you actually get the point of the book. However, these texts often feel like an essay and therefore it feels more like studying to me than actually relaxing.

What is the last nonfiction book you read?

That was Beyond the story by BTS. That didn’t feel like an essay to me fortunately, it was extremely easy to read. However, not as easy as Spare by Prince Harry, because Beyond the Story includes lots of chart data though.

Are there any nonfiction books you always recommend to others? What
are your favorite nonfiction subjects to read about?

I put the final questions together as my answer both is none. I mean, I barely read nonfiction myself, so who am I to recommend this genre to others? If I read nonfiction, it’s a biography or memoir, but it happens more often than not that I pick these up.

Do you read nonfiction or do you despise this genre as much as I do? And if you read this genre, what subjects are you interested in?
