Top Ten Tuesday: Forgotten Backlist Titles

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Earlier this year, I’ve created a Top Ten Tuesday list with backlist titles I want to read in 2023. Now, we will revisit the backlist books, but now I’ll be talking about the ones that seem to be forgotten. This list is based on my own personal experience. Maybe these books are still popular on e.g. Booktok, but I’m not aware of that since I’m not active on that platform. So, here are backlist titles I believe that are forgotten as they barely get any attention anymore.

  • The Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout – I know I know, this series can be seen as “trash” now as they contain elements that were okay back in the early 2010s but are highly inappropriate now. Times have changed, but that doesn’t change the fact I still had a good time reading this series. I highly enjoyed these books.
  • The Dark Elements by Jennifer L. Armentrout – Yes, another JLA series that seems to be forgotten. Strange, because you should definitely read this series before picking up the Harbinger series. The storyline comtains many elements of The Dark Elements. To be frank, the first book was one I didn’t really enjoy, but it got better afterwards.
  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas – I have to admit that I’m not 100% sure about this one, but I like never see it anymore on any book platform. This book is quite important and spreads an important message. I expected it to stay popular a little longer though.
  • Simon versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli – I know I know, there are better LGBTQIA+ books nowadays, but this was the breakthrough book for this author. Also, this was my first queer novel I’ve read after picking up reading again in 2017.
  • A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown – This book had SO MUCH hype around its publication back in 2020, but it all seemed to have died down. The second book in this duoly got much and much less hype unfortunately. I still haven’t read it either though since I couldn’t connect to the narrators for that one.
  • Children of Blod and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi – This probably has to do with the sequels taking forever and ever to release. It has taken nearly 2 years for the second book in this series to get out in the world and now we have been waiting for the third book for nearly 3 years. So, it’s quite logical that this title is kind of forgotten.
  • I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman – This was my introduction to this author. Heartstopper is still really popular, but this novel seems to be forgotten.
  • Ink by Alice Broadway – This book was highly enjoyable although not the best one out there. I had quite a good time when reading it. I didn’t enjoy the second one really and haven’t read the final book in this series.
  • The Chosen by Taran Matharu – This actually applies to all books by this author, they seem to be forgotten. From this series, I still have to read books 2 and 3 though.
  • The Jewel by Amy Ewing – Another book I picked up right after getting back into reading. However, it seems to be less popular than I’d initially was aware of. However, I had a good time reading it. Books 2 and 3 were less interesting, but still enjoyable.

So, these are backlist titles I believe are forgotten. Have you read any of these?

  1. I’ve only read Simon versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda, but I DO remember seeing a lot of the others around the blogosphere a while back!

  2. The Hate U Give was very interesting.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  3. I haven’t seen anything about these books. Good picks.

Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.

  4. I haven’t seen anything about The Hate U Give in a while either. I’m glad to see it on your list though, because I think it’s important people remember it and return to it.

  5. I haven’t read any of these, but I do recognize several. Nice list.

  6. The Hate U Give did seem to burn bright and then kind of fizzle out quickly, I tried to read it but couldn’t really get into it. Enjoyed the film adaptation though. Simon, again I only saw the film adaptation but I thought that was cute. I really enjoyed Children of Blood and Bone but found the second book kind of mediocre and I feel like it’s been so long waiting for the third book now that people (including me) have kind of lost interest. It’s a real shame that A Song of Wraiths and Ruin kind of died down after release because I thought it was really great, I wasn’t such a fan of the sequel but it was still good.

    1. I totally agree with you on Children of Blood and Bone!

      1. It’s a real shame because it started out so well, and I really do want to support more Black-authored fantasy.

  7. I had Children of Blood and Bone on my TBR for quite a while, but I don’t think I ever checked it out of the library. The only one I’ve read on your list is The Hate U Give. Sometimes I wonder if having a movie made of your book means fewer people end up reading the book because they just watch the movie instead!
I like your idea of listing books that had a lot of attention when they were new but dropped off the radar after that.

  8. I feel like I still see some of these around, but not nearly as much as they used to be. When a sequel comes out, it seems to renew interest in the first book. Otherwise, it seems like so many books get pushed into the background so fast! It’s too bad. At least they’re getting some love this week!

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!
