Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted by Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Since April 2022, the meme moved to another host, Aria @ Book Nook Bits. Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and share their love by visiting each other’s posts.
I’m back with another LTB post! I missed last week’s topic since I’m too much of a mood reader for that one. I don’t make summer reading plans so I felt like it wouldn’t make sense to talk about it. This week’s topic however, is quite interesting for a mood reader like me. It has been suggested by Jillian @ The Bookish Butterfly and it’s about monthly reading themes.
Prompts: With pride month in June, Black history month in February, Women’s history month in March, and so many more, themes related to race, identity and social justice hold a lot of significance for many communities. There are often reading challenges set around these themes as well. Do you ever read along with monthly themes? How do you think this helps with diversifying reading? And what about the rest of the year?
Personally, I don’t do much with these monthly reading themes. However, I try to squeeze in several books during pride month or spooky season. But, I just can’t stick to a TBR. However, I feel like these monthly reading themes help people from said community to feel seen and for readers outside these communities to learn more about them. Therefore, it helps with diversifying your reading.
When looking to the rest of the year however, it’s important to not stop diversifying reading. If you just stick to the montly reading theme, it may put off the feeling that you’re just in for that theme and that you don’t care about these communities for the remainder of the year. I don’t say it’s anyone’s attention, but for me it feels like this way. Therefore, I believe that monthly reading themes somehow helps in raising awareness, but that they shouldn’t be needed because we shouldn’t forget to diversify our reading all year round. For someone who’s a mood reader, they are a hastle anyway because they feel like pressure. I just want to read whatever I want, whenever I want and I don’t care if I read ffor example a pride book in January, June or September.
How do you feel about monthly reading themes?
