Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and share their love by visiting each other’s posts.
this week’s topic is suggested by our host Aria and is “What causes reading slumps”?
Prompts: There have been past LTB topics about ways to get out of reading slumps, but I was curious about why they happen in the first place. Do you fall into reading slumps often? What causes them? Are there patterns you notice with when you tend to read fewer books? What do you do to get out of a reading slump?
When it comes to reading slumps, I fall into them. Hard. Every year. Mine are mainly linked to the darker seasons and the end of the year. Sometime around the end of October, I feel it coming, the annual reading slump. This one often lasts till after New Year’s. This is one on one connected to my energy levels decreasing and just feeling tired overall. I fall asleep whilst reading, many books don’t grab my attention and I’m outright BORED. I struggle with finding the right book these months and I tend to finish less books than earlier in the year.
Also, besides the annual reading slump, there are the minor reading slumps. These often occur when I’m doubting whether to DNF a book. They mainly happen when I’m struggling with a book. I nearly always end up finishing said book, but I guess it’s better to just DNF it. However, sometimes it’s not a DNF forever. Look at Thunderhead, the timing was just not right the first time around. The same happened to The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty and so there are more books with this outcome.
How do I recognize a slump coming around for a visit? Well, I often just scroll through social media instead of reading, I’m not interested by the book and it takes me forever to actually finish said book. It could also be caused by a genre bore-out, but that’s something totally different.
What do I do to get out of it? Actually not much. I either reread a book, switch to a different book or sit this one out. I know it will pass eventually and especially the annual winter slump is hard to force myself out of as it’s so connected to my energy levels.
Do you get into reading slumps often? What causes them for you? How do you recognize them and what do you do to get out of them?
