Top Ten Tuesday: Things Getting in the Way of Reading

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Well, let’s immediately get to the things that are getting in the way of reading right now.

  • Blogging – This is super ironic, but writing blog posts take away my reading time. To have enough content, I actually have to read, but I also have to write content to keep my blog up and running. You see?
  • Work – I work 4 days a week and I don’t mind, but I also have other things to do and therefore I can’t read. Luckily I can read on the commute though.
  • Chores – I can’t read when doing chores. I do them better when music is playing. However, I could put an audiobook on my ears when doing the dishes (I have to do them manually), but I still prefer music I guess.
  • Sleep – I need sleep, duh. But I fall asleep whenever I want to read.
  • Gym – I go to the gym either once, or twice a week. However, I have a 25-minute walk to actually get there and I can’t read (listen to audiobooks) whilst walking, that’s a little dangerous for me. My type of fitness is Milon and you have to do many quick transfers and therefore reading is not the best thing to do. All in all it takes me about 2 hours, 2 hours lost reading time.

Thankfully it’s not a list of 10 things getting in the way of reading, but it’s basically life. This is why I’m super behind on my reading challenge and why I’m wondering whether I will surpass my goal of 100 books this year.

What does get in the way of your reading time?

  1. I completely forgot about the time it takes off reading is blogging about reading, like right now. Ha!

  2. Yes, blogging totally takes time away from reading. It’s kind of funny how that works, especially for those of us who blog about books. 🙂

  4. All of these things keep me from reading at times too.

  5. Yes blogging does take my time also! And I’ve started walking on the treadmill daily so I put on an audiobook to get some “reading” done lol.

  6. I always listen to audiobooks while washing dishes and doing other chores. It makes them much more enjoyable!

    Happy TTT!

  7. It’s kind of hilarious that book blogs stop us from reading books. It’s true though. I’d probably read a lot more if I wasn’t writing about the books I read!

  8. I definitely feel you on falling asleep when you’re trying to read: I used to read before bed but I don’t do that anymore because I usually fall asleep whilst trying to read a chapter! And yes, blogging also ironically takes my time away from reading. I do listen to a lot of audiobooks though, so I do get quite a lot of reading in when I’m doing other things like walking, running or commuting.

  9. I really need to start listening to audiobooks again. I haven’t listened to one in years. I agree about not feeling safe when you’re walking with headphones on, though.
