This week it’s time to talk about series and the topic has been suggested by Hannah @ Hannah’s Library.
Prompts: What is the ideal number of books in a series? Does it depend on the genre? Do you prefer longer series with five or more books, or shorter series with less than that? Have you ever read a duology and if so, did you wish it was longer, or was two books enough for the story?
What is the ideal number of books in a series?
Personally, I think 3 or 4. 5 Books are fine too, but a longer series often demotivates me to even start. However, Harry Potter was 7 books and I still finished that. What I really dislike are the novellas that come with a series as bonus. They often don’t interest me as much, the main story does. This is different for my favorite series though.
Does it depend on the genre?
Absolutely not. Too long is too long, too much is too much. I’m more demotivated to start a long fantasy series though than for example a longer young adult series.
Do you prefer longer series with five or more books, or shorter series with less than that?
I’m sorry, but I feel like I’m repeating myself here. Five books is the maximum length, but it totally depends on the books themselves. Am I bored by the first or second book? Then I simply won’t continue.
Have you ever read a duology and if so, did you wish it was longer, or was two books enough for the story?
The problem with duologies is that they are often too long already. I barely read a great one, the second book felt like a filler and could have been done by an epilogue in the first book. The other way around sometimes happens too, but that’s an exception. There’s no in between in my opinion, they either feel too rushed, or too extended.
