Top Ten Tuesday: Books About World War II

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s topic was completely different, but since it’s liberation week I decided to put a spotlight on some novels that take place in World War II. On May 5, 1945, the Netherlands was liberated from a 5-year long occupation by Nazi-Germany. It used to be a national holiday, but that has been reduced to once every 5 years. However, there are festivities every year. On May 4, we remember the victims of this war and all the other wars the world has known. Therefore, I’d rather do something completely different this week. Click on the book title to go to the book page on Goodreads.

Have you read any of these books yet? I’ve read several, others are on my to be read pile. Which book about World War II do you recommend?

  1. How lovely it is to imagine that the Netherlands celebrates the day it was liberated from Nazi Germany! And these books are perfect for that celebration.

  2. I loved The Nightingale!

  3. In Ukraine 20 years ago this month I was shocked at how vivid the war was–how much people spoke of it and not only due to V.E. Day being in May. How amazing that the Netherlands has a week devoted to their nation’s liberation. Another way the country is so wonderful! To me it is my grandfather’s war–he fought in Europe from the earliest days of US involvement right through to the end. Enjoy your national holiday.

  4. I think my comment was eaten! If not, delete this. I am so glad you have that national week to celebrate. Here in the US it is ancient history. Much better your way.

  5. It sounds macabre to say that I love books about World War II, but I do enjoy them even though the subject is a difficult one. There’s just something about the drama and conflict of it all that makes for interesting reading! I especially love learning about heroic things people did during those hard times. Surprisingly, I’ve only read three of the books on your list. I’ll definitely take a closer look at the others.

    Happy TTT!
