Let’s Talk Bookish: All About Acronyms

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted by Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Since April 2022, the meme moved to another host, Aria @ Book Nook Bits. Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and share their love by visiting each other’s posts.

This week’s topic is suggested by our host Aria and is something you see a lot in the book community, acronnyms. You either love them or hate them, but you can’t avoid them.

Prompts: TBR, DNF, ARC, YA… the list of bookish acronyms goes on. What are some acronyms you think readers and book bloggers should be aware of? Were you ever confused about acronyms when you started blogging?

As you can see, there are lots of acronyms. Several are already mentioned in the prompt, but there are lots more. Besides the “familiar” ones, even books and series have acronyms. A Court of Thorns and Roses for example is ACOTAR, Lord of the Rings LOTR, The Lunar Chronicles TLC, Shadow and Bone SAB and so on.

I think bookish people in general should be aware of these acronyms and then especially off the fact they might not ring a bell by other people. It’s book community language and many people are not aware of this, especially people who are new to it. Furthermore, they are often used by the younger generations.

How to avoid confusion? Write the acronyms out in full length when using them for the first time in a blog post. On instagram and other social media it’s different because of limited space, but your blog is your own corner on the internet and you have as much space as possible. So, for instance, when you write about ARCs, first write it like this: advanced reader copy (ARC). Afterwards, it’s fine to use the acronym. Repeat this with all acronyms in your blog post and do this with every single blogpost. Myself, I didn’t know what ARC meant for over a year. Therefore, it’s very important to enlighten people about this. It also makes your blog nicer to read and even more accessible.
