Top Ten Tuesday: Books Taking Place On A Boarding School

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week is a freebie which means you are allowed to come up with your own topic. Somehow I noticed that many of the books I’ve read or on my TBR are taking place on a boarding school. This good be a boarding school in the real world, or a boarding school like Hogwarts or for other magical creatures. I’ve tried to come up with a variation of both. Without further ado, books taking place on a boarding school. Click on the book cover to go to the book page on Goodreads.

The Year After You by Nina de Pass
The Awakening (Zodiac Academy #1) by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti
The Chandler Legacies by Abdi Nazemian
Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle #1) by Jay Kristoff

Actually only the first book takes place on a boarding school.

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy #1) by Richelle Mead
Looking for Alaska by John Green
A Deadly Education (The Scholomance #1) by Naomi Novik
Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss #1) by Stephanie Perkins
Youngblood by Sasha Laurens
The Novice (Summoner #1) by Taran Matharu

  1. I’m trying to read all the 1001 Children’s Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up, and I’ve been surprised to find how many of them take place in boarding schools.

    1. I know right! And this type of schooling is not even a thing in my country at all.

  2. It’s impressive to see how many contemporary books there are about boarding schools!

  3. I’ve only read a couple – Anna and Alaska. If you haven’t read them yet, I would recommend The Disreputable History of Frankie Landou-Banks by E. Lockhart, Rebel by Ginger Scott, and Misfit by Elle Kennedy. Those were all fun books that fit this topic.

    1. I first want to read Family of Liars by E. Lockhart, because I wasn’t the biggest fan of We Were Liars. I’ve read several college romances by Elle Kennedy though.

      1. I would say that this Lockhart book is nothing like We Were Liars. If you like those Kennedy books, chances are you would like Misfit. It’s the first in a new series.

  4. I’ve also enjoyed a lot of books with boarding school settings in the past, though I’ll admit, I read less of them now.

  5. *cheers for boarding school books* LOVE it. It is not something in my country so I have always been curious about it and loved reading about it. Will have to check out the Year After You and The Chandler Legacies~

    1. Nee klopt hier kennen wij dat helemaal niet. Misschien zijn die boeken daarom wel zo fascinerend.

  6. I love the boarding school setting and Vampire Academy is one of my faves. Great topic!

  7. I love the cover/ colours of The Chandler Legacies. That’s one I’ll look into.

  8. The bottom illustration of the redhead almost looks Lindsay Lohan inspired!

I have read a few books set in boarding schools. All of the Harry Potter books and Cat Among the Pigeons by Agatha Christie and The Secret Place by Tana French. It is a great setting.

  10. I’ve read quite a few of these! I really enjoyed Anna and the French Kiss & Vampire Academy. I’ve read A Deadly Education but haven’t gone on with the series yet. My favourite book set at boarding school is On The Jellicoe Road, by Melina Marchetta. When I was younger, I always wanted to attend a boarding school because books made it seem so fun!

Great list and thanks for visiting my TTT!

  12. I like boarding school books, too! My favorite are the Harry Potter ones, but I also like Maureen Johnson’s Truly Devious series as well as her Shades of London series.

    Happy TTT!

It’s funny how many books are set in a boarding school like everyone goes to them. One that I read last year is based on the board game Clue.

  14. Great topic idea! I like that there are some titles on here that I’m not as familiar with 🙂

  15. Boarding schools are great settings! The only one I’ve read on this list is Looking For Alaska, but I think I have a few others on my TBR.

  16. […] the moment I found out it’s about vampires. Vampires on a boarding shcool even. And you know, I enjoy that setting. I was a little hesitant still as it gave me major Vampire Academy vibes and that’s one of my […]
