Let’s Talk Bookish | DNFing Books

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme that was originally created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books starting in August 2019, and was then cohosted by Dani @ Literary Lion from May 2020 to March 2022. Since April 2022, this meme is hosted by , Aria @ Book Nook Bits and since February 2025, Dini @ DiniPandaReads is the co-host. Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and share their love by visiting each other’s posts.

This week’s topic is suggested by Mint from Mint Loves Bookks and it’s all about not finishing books. Prompts: DNF is an acronym that stands for did not finish. What makes you DNF a book? How often do you DNF books? What’s the silliest or pettiest reason why you DNF’d a book? Do you review books that you DNF?

Let’s be really honest here, I DNF books a lot. Actually, I didn’t do a few years ago, but once you read more, you become more experienced and also your tastes change. You have a better perspective or view on what you don’t like in books and when it’s time to call it quits. For me, it mostly happens with overhyped books that aren’t that great after all.

There are several reasons for me to DNF a book. However, the main reasons are writing style or plot. When the writing makes me struggle with a book, I tend to DNF it. Same goes for the plot, but intrigue and enjoyment play a huge role in there as well. If a book bores me, I am absolutely DNFing it instead of continuing to struggle to the bitter end. I don’t think I have DNF’ed because of a silly orr petty reason.

When talking about the amount of DNF’ed books, I have to look on my Goodreads DNF shelf. I DNF’ed 73 books in at least the past 4 years. That’s a lot right? And all because of the reasons I’ve mentioned before. When it comes to reviewing these books, I don’t. Or at least, not on the blog. I mention why I DNF’ed it on Goodreads and if I remember to do so on my monthly wrap-up. In my opinion, you’re not able to review a book you haven’t finished properly because you quit somewhere in the story and therefore cannot judge the entire body of work.

How about you? Do you DNF books and if so, why? Also, what do you think of reviewing books you did not finish?
